Glenn Kotche (Wilco) When Glenn Kotche replaced original Wilco drummer Ken Coomer in 2001, he brought an experimental composer’s sensibility and sense of rhythmic freedom to Jeff Tweedy’s not-so-merry band. Known for employing otherwise nonmusical objects — back massagers, hand fans, hubcaps, and chains — the former drum and bugle corps member took a “total percussion” approach to playing while still crushing hard-rock grooves like butter (cf. Nels Cline). Most Booming Moment: Kotche’s 11-minute live version of the Hindu Ramayana legend “Monkey Chant,” from his 2006 solo album Mobile. RICHARD GEHR

“Wilco drummer music Glenn Kotche is the unlikely star of a new commercial for kitchen sinks. Kotche demonstrates the tap-on technology by playing a cover of The Four Tops’ ‘Reach Out, I’ll Be There’. It’s fairly impressive but not quite as great as his recent appearance on Melbourne’s Triple R when luggage delays forced him to play using forks on an improvised drum kit, built from scrap metal found in the lane behind the radio station.”
